Artificial intelligence: what is it and how does it work?

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a technology that allows machines to simulate human intelligence. It is used in various fields, such as speech recognition, machine translation, image recognition and decision making.

There are several types of AI, each with its own characteristics and uses.

Weak AI, also called limited AI or Level 1 AI, is capable of performing a specific task but cannot adapt to new situations or learn autonomously. A common example of weak AI is a speech recognition system that can transcribe what you say but cannot understand the meaning of your words.

Strong AI, also called general AI or Level 2 AI, is capable of adapting to new situations and learning autonomously. It is able to solve complex problems and make decisions independently. A common example of strong AI is a machine translation system that can translate text into different languages and adapt to different contexts.

How does AI work?

There are several approaches to developing AI, but one of the most common is machine learning. Machine learning is an AI technique that allows a machine to « learn » from data without being explicitly programmed.

To use machine learning, one begins by collecting a large amount of data about the topic of interest. This data is then used to train an AI model, which is an algorithm that will analyze the data and draw conclusions.

Once the model is trained, it can be given new data and will be able to predict outcomes or make decisions. For example, if an AI model is trained to recognize dogs in photos, it will be able to recognize a dog in a new photo presented to it.

There are several types of machine learning models, such as neural networks, decision trees and support vector machines. Each of these models is adapted to specific tasks and can be used as needed.
